One of the most celebrated movies in cinema history and a key influence on contemporary films like Blade Runner and Star Wars, METROPOLIS continues to be relevant 90 years later with themes of social stratification, rebellion, and ill effects of technology. GSTOS will present the 2010 digital restoration of the film; this includes 25 minutes of footage that was lost for 80 years, and rediscovered in a museum archive in Argentina. The restoration includes key scenes that had been cut—either because they were considered to be too brutal or too long—a practice common of theater operators in the early days of cinema. The integration of these newly restored scenes and subplots
endow METROPOLIS with even greater tension and emotional resonance, as it dramatizes the conflict between wealthy über-capitalists and rebellious subterranean laborers which is orchestrated by a diabolical scientist capable of destroying them both.

“Be ready for some serious time travel,” says Cathy Martin, Vice-President and Program Chair of the Garden State Theatre Organ Society. “When Brett is playing you may really think that you are back in 1927.” Brett Miller has played for silent films at the four theaters in the Renew Theaters chain including performances at the County Theater in Doylestown, and the Garden in Princeton. Only 16 years old, he has already compiled a significant resume in the region. He is a staff organist at Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theatre in Jersey City, and has performed at the Colonial Theater in Phoenixville, and the Brook Performing Arts Center in Bound Brook, New Jersey. This past summer he place second in the nation in the Young Theatre Organist Competition put on by the
American Theatre Organ Society. Along with his brother Evan, he created
musicalpromise.org a musical initiative to help fund the Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation.

With support from the Al Hirschfeld Foundation, there will be a special presentation of Hirschfeld drawings of silent screen stars shown before the film, accompanied by the Pennridge High School Jazz Ensemble. “We applaud both Brett and the Garden State Theatre Organ Society for creating such a special night to help others in need,” says David Leopold, Creative Director of the Al Hirschfeld Foundation. “We are big believers that you can have fun while doing good, and with Brett and friends involved, this is going to be a fun time. All you have to do is buy a ticket to do good.”
